How to Choose Your Garage Door
Choosing and buying a garage door can be nerve wracking. It’s a highly visible investment in your home that you’ll live with for years to come. To help you make the right choice, we’ve developed a list of key factors to consider to help you narrow your search.
Choose your design
A new garage door can completely transform the look of your house. A custom wood door can add a rustic feel, a sturdy colourful steel door can add a pop to your homes aesthetic, while uniquely placed glass panels can give it a modern look. The beauty of today’s garage doors is the sky is the limit when it comes to style. Gone are the days of having only a few colours to choose from. Now there are a multitude of paint colours, stains and finishes to ensure the perfect complement to your home’s current siding, trim or shutters. Windows as well come in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes from opaque finishes to darkened for privacy. If the variety of options sounds daunting, one of our design specialists will walk you through the process and help you choose a look that matches your homes current style.
What material will work for you?
A garage door is an important piece of your home or business’ safety. As such it must be durable and reliable. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Wood Garage Doors – While wood garage doors do take a bit of extra care to maintain their beauty, the effort is worth it to add rustic charm to your home. Wood garage doors will require painting and staining every one to three years
Fibreglass Garage Doors – If you want the look of a wood garage door without the maintenance, consider a fiberglass garage door. With a wood grain surface combined with a durable steel construction, it will look like wood but won’t crack, warp or rot.
Steel Garage Doors – For the ultimate in durability, consider a steel garage door. Extremely durable and only needing an occasional touchup, steel garage doors can be painted in a variety of colours to complement your home.
Aluminum Garage Doors – Aluminum garage doors are made with aluminum frames and glass panel in a variety of option. While they are fairly maintenance-free, they do not offer as much insulation as other garage doors.
Keep warm with insulation
The proper insulation can not only regulate temperature but can also help with noise reduction. Choose from two types of garage door insulation: polystyrene and foamed-in-place polyurethane.
Polystyrene – This insulation comes in set sized sheets and fits between the front and back panels of the door, but does not fill the entire cavity. Doors with polystyrene insulation can be thicker, but have a lower R-value than polyurethane-insulated doors.
Polyurethane – This insulation is foamed in and expands to fill the cavity between the front and back panels of the door. Due to this, a polyurethane-insulated door might look thinner but will offer a high R-value.
How much should you spend?
A new garage door doesn’t need to cost a fortune. In fact many people are surprised by how affordable garage doors can be. When considering your budget, remember that this purchase is meant to last years and the door and style you choose can have a significant impact on your home and your property value.
